Every crypto bull run looks obvious in hindsight and impossible to call in real time. Our crypto bull run prediction does not try to name a date. Instead, it tracks the handful of signals that were present at the start of every major rally and checks how many of them are flashing today.

Below you will find a signal checklist, a short history of how the 2017 and 2021 altseasons actually unfolded, what we are watching in late 2026 and a scenario timeline running up to and beyond the next Bitcoin halving.

Key takeaways
  • No single indicator calls a bull run. The strongest starts combined easing liquidity, ETF or institutional inflows, rising stablecoin supply and a recovering mood.
  • As of early November 2026, most signals are neutral to negative: the Fed hiked in September, ETFs saw outflows and the Fear & Greed Index sits in Fear.
  • Halving timing is the one tailwind on the calendar: the next one is expected around April 2028.
  • Altseason has historically arrived late in a bull market, after Bitcoin leads and Bitcoin dominance starts to break down.
  • Our model’s average Bitcoin estimate for 2028 is $137,890, versus $76,008 today.

What Drives a Crypto Bull Run

Strip away the memes and a bull market is just more money wanting to own crypto than wanting to sell it, for a long time. That money comes from a few places: cheap credit when interest rates fall, new investment products that let fresh buyers in, stablecoin balances parked on-chain waiting to be deployed, and plain excitement once prices start rising.

Supply matters too. Bitcoin’s halving cuts the flow of new coins every four years, and long-term holders tend to hoard when prices are low. When rising demand meets shrinking available supply, prices can climb faster than fundamentals alone would justify. That reflexive loop is what turns a recovery into a bull run.

The catch is that these drivers rarely line up perfectly. In 2020–2021 nearly all of them pointed the same way. In 2024–2025 the ETF launch and the halving pushed Bitcoin to new highs, but higher interest rates limited how far the rally spread to smaller coins.

The Bull Run Signal Checklist

Here is the framework we use. Each signal has a “bullish reading” that showed up near the start of past bull markets, and a snapshot of where it stood in early November 2026.

Liquidity and the Fed

This is the heavyweight signal. Crypto’s best years, 2017 and 2020–2021, came with cheap money, and its worst, 2018 and 2022, came as the Fed tightened. In 2026 the picture flipped against crypto: after three cuts in late 2025, the Fed under Chair Kevin Warsh raised rates by 25 basis points in September 2026 to 3.75–4.00%, citing inflation driven by higher oil prices. A turn back toward cuts would be the single biggest change to watch. We cover the mechanics in how Fed interest rates affect Bitcoin.

Halving timing

The halving is the only signal you can put on a calendar. In past cycles, the 12 months before a halving brought a recovery and the 12–18 months after it produced the steepest gains. Our Bitcoin 4-year cycle analysis lays out every halving and its aftermath in detail. The caution: returns have shrunk each cycle, so the halving is a tailwind, not an engine.

Bitcoin dominance

Bitcoin dominance is BTC’s share of the total crypto market cap. Early in a bull market, money flows into Bitcoin first and dominance rises. A sustained break lower, while total market cap keeps climbing, has historically marked the start of altseason. Different data providers calculate it differently, so compare trends on one source rather than levels across sources.

ETF flows

Since January 2024, spot Bitcoin ETFs have been a major new channel for demand, with about $56 billion of cumulative net inflows by early November 2026 per SoSoValue. Weeks of steady inflows have lined up with Bitcoin’s strongest rallies, and long outflow streaks with its slumps. Our crypto ETF analysis tracks flows for Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and XRP funds.

Stablecoin supply

Stablecoins like USDT and USDC are the cash of crypto markets. When their total supply grows, it usually means new dollars are entering the ecosystem, ready to buy other assets. A shrinking supply suggests money is leaving. The total hit a record above $320 billion earlier in 2026 and has since slipped, which is consistent with a market in risk-off mode.

Sentiment and the Fear & Greed Index

The Crypto Fear & Greed Index compresses volatility, momentum, social activity and other inputs into a score from 0 (extreme fear) to 100 (extreme greed). Contrarians see extreme fear as a potential buying zone and extreme greed as a warning. The live reading is shown below when the data feed is available.

Source: Alternative.me. 0–24 extreme fear, 25–44 fear, 45–55 neutral, 56–75 greed, 76–100 extreme greed. Sentiment is a context signal, not a timing tool.

Sentiment works best as a confirming signal. Fear can persist for months during a bear market, so a low reading on its own does not mean the bottom is in.

How Altseasons Historically Unfolded

Altseason is the phase when altcoins massively outperform Bitcoin. It has followed a recognizable sequence: Bitcoin rallies first, then Ethereum catches up, then large-cap altcoins, and finally small caps and meme coins go vertical, usually near the very end.

The 2017–2018 altseason

At the start of 2017, Bitcoin made up roughly 85% of the crypto market. The ICO boom changed that. Projects raised money by selling tokens, mostly for ETH, which drove Ethereum from around $8 at the start of the year to a peak above $1,400 in January 2018. Bitcoin dominance fell to roughly 33% that month, its lowest ever. Then the bubble burst: many ICO tokens went to near zero and dominance rebounded as money fled back to Bitcoin.

The 2021 altseason

In January 2021, Bitcoin dominance stood near 70%. Over the next four months, flush with stimulus money and near-zero interest rates, investors rotated aggressively into altcoins, and dominance dropped to around 40% by May. Dogecoin peaked near $0.73 in early May 2021, Litecoin above $400 and Chainlink above $52. A crash in May interrupted the run, but Ethereum went on to a new high near $4,870 in November 2021, the same month Bitcoin topped.

The 2024–2025 cycle: a missing altseason

This cycle broke the pattern. Bitcoin dominance stayed high, and the rally concentrated in Bitcoin, which had its own ETFs. Some large caps did set records (Solana in January 2025, XRP in July 2025 and Ethereum in August 2025), but those moves were short and the broad small-cap mania never arrived. Many 2021 favorites finished the cycle far below their old highs. Thousands of new tokens, meme coin launch platforms and token unlocks diluted demand that once concentrated in a few hundred coins.

Altseason Signals to Watch

If an altseason comes in the next cycle, these are the tells that usually come first:

  1. ETH/BTC turns up. Ethereum outperforming Bitcoin for several weeks has preceded both past altseasons. Our Ethereum price prediction tracks its technical position.
  2. Bitcoin dominance breaks down while total market cap rises. Falling dominance during a crash is not altseason; it has to happen in a rising market.
  3. Altcoin ETF inflows. Spot ETFs for Solana, XRP, Litecoin, Hedera and Dogecoin launched in late 2025. Sustained inflows there would be a new, institutional version of the rotation.
  4. Stablecoin supply hitting new highs. Altseasons need fresh money, not just recycled Bitcoin gains.
  5. Meme coin and small-cap froth. When meme coins lead and retail search interest spikes, altseason is often near its end rather than its start.

What to Watch Now

In early November 2026 the market is digesting several things at once. Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress in the November 3 midterm elections, which lowers the odds that the stalled CLARITY Act market-structure bill passes in its current form. Bitcoin briefly bounced above $80,000 after the vote, then gave the gains back as tech stocks sold off and spot ETFs saw a $430 million outflow on November 5.

The near-term calendar is busy: October CPI data on November 10, and the Fed’s December 8–9 meeting, where futures markets priced a high chance of another hike. On the supportive side, the GENIUS Act stablecoin rules take effect in January 2027, which could encourage more regulated stablecoin issuance. Our analysis of the midterm elections’ crypto impact covers the political angle in more depth.

Preparing for the next cycle?

Building a position slowly during quiet phases has historically been less stressful than buying after a breakout. Size it so a deep drawdown would not hurt.

What Could Delay the Next Bull Run

A bull run needs fuel, and several things could keep the tank empty:

  • Sticky inflation and more hikes. If oil-driven inflation persists, the Fed may keep tightening into 2027.
  • A recession or equity bear market. Crypto has traded like a high-beta tech asset during sell-offs.
  • Regulatory gridlock. Without clear US market-structure rules, some institutions may stay on the sidelines.
  • Forced sellers. Companies that loaded up on crypto with debt could be pushed to sell in a downturn.
  • A major hack or stablecoin failure, which would damage trust the way Terra and FTX did in 2022.

Our crypto bear market analysis explains how previous downturns ended and which crash-risk signals to monitor.

How to Prepare Without Trying to Time It

Most investors who did well across past cycles did not call the exact bottom. They had a plan before the excitement started. A few principles hold up regardless of when the next rally begins:

  • Decide your allocation in advance. Pick a share of your portfolio you can tolerate losing most of, and stick to it.
  • Consider dollar-cost averaging. Buying a fixed amount at regular intervals spreads your entry across good and bad prices.
  • Favor liquidity and staying power. Altcoins can outperform late in a bull run, but they also fall harder. Our best crypto to buy page compares major coins on model outlook and risk.
  • Set profit-taking rules early. Euphoria makes selling hard. Writing down target levels in advance helps.

Frequently asked questions

When is the next crypto bull run expected?

No one knows the date. If the historical halving pattern repeats, conditions tend to improve in the year before a halving (the next is expected around April 2028) and the strongest gains have come 12–18 months after it. Liquidity matters as much as timing: a sustained bull run usually needs falling rates or rising money supply, not just a calendar.

What is altseason in crypto?

Altseason is a period when altcoins, meaning cryptocurrencies other than Bitcoin, rise much faster than Bitcoin and capture a growing share of total market value. It typically shows up as a falling Bitcoin dominance chart and a rising ETH/BTC ratio. The clearest examples came in late 2017 to January 2018 and in the first half of 2021.

How do I know if a crypto bull run has started?

Look for several signals at once rather than one: Bitcoin holding above its rising 200-day moving average, consistent ETF inflows, growing stablecoin supply, an easing Fed and sentiment recovering from fear without tipping into extreme greed. A single green week is not a bull run; a sequence of higher highs and higher lows over months is.

Will there be an altseason in this cycle?

It is uncertain. The 2024–2025 cycle saw Bitcoin dominance stay high, and most altcoins failed to beat their 2021 highs, so a broad 2017-style altseason did not happen. A future altseason likely needs abundant liquidity and a falling Bitcoin dominance, and it may be more selective, favoring coins with ETFs, revenue or clear use cases.

Does the Fed affect crypto bull runs?

Yes, strongly. The 2020–2021 bull run was fueled by zero interest rates and Fed bond buying, while the 2022 bear market began as the Fed started hiking. In 2026 the Fed raised rates in September, which removed one of the main tailwinds. Rate cuts or renewed balance-sheet expansion would be among the most important bullish signals.

How long do crypto bull runs last?

Measured from the cycle low to the peak, the last three Bitcoin bull markets each lasted close to three years: January 2015 to December 2017, December 2018 to November 2021 and November 2022 to October 2025. The steepest, most euphoric part usually comes in the final six to twelve months.
